LUTEFISK STRIKES

A Kindly Contributor teaches the Lads to practice safe computing. Note the absolute lack of feeling with which the Lads greet "Louise"'s tale of being searched at the airport or having to borrow her nephew's money to pay the Lad's fees. Note their lack of response after apparently downloading a nasty virus. Finally note the Lads' latest fake company, "Eurolite BV". Says our Kindly Contributor:
Following are all the email correspondences I've had with a Nigerian Scamster along with my notes and observations. Please feel free to publish or use in any way. Note that I am not attaching any of the fake documents and pictures that I received, rather, I have posted them on a website as linked appropriately. I am not particularly attached to the Louise Rockford "nom de scam" so I don't really care if that is made public either. Note that the punchline is a "nasty" little executable which was linked on this front website, however, just so that it doesn't get out there I have removed the file itself from the place where it used to be.

[ It starts with a scammy letter to a friend of "Louise" Louise wasn't clearly thinking humour. Louise was just thinking about getting to the "punchline" as soon as possible - which would be the delivery of something nasty ]

I CAN INTRODUCE YOU TO MY SON (KONGOLO ) WHO HAS THE
OUT MODALITIES FOR THE CLAIM OF THE SAID FUNDS. I WANT
YOU TO ASSIST IN INVESTING THIS MONEY, BUT I WILL NOT
WANT MY IDENTITY REVEALED. I WILL ALSO WANT TO BUY
PROPERTIES AND STOCK IN MULTI-NATIONAL OMPANIES AND TO
ENGAGE IN OTHER SAFE AND NON-SPECULATIVE INVESTMENTS.
MAY I AT THIS POINT EMPHASISE THE HIGH LEVEL OF

Dear Louise Rockford,

Thank you very much for your response to my mother's
mail, which she has forwarded to me, so that both of us (you and I)
will work as a team, to actualize our dream.

I am Kevin Kongolo Sese-seko, Before I brief you on the nature of the
pending project at hand. I would want to bring to your notice that due
to the present political situation in my country, my family is under
surveillance. Therefore, I will be most obliged of both of us have at the
bottom of our heartthat confidentiality comes before anything in this
our pending project.

In a nutshell, confidentiality should be our watch
word. Sequel to my mother's mail, the deposited the sum
of $18,000,000.00 USD with a security company in
Amsterdam, and the government of my country is unaware
of this money, if not they would have confiscated it.
hence you see the reason why confidentiality is
necessary in ensuring a smooth completion of this
deal.

Furtherance to the above, we seek your assistance to
travel down to Amsterdam and act as the beneficiary of
the money, secure the money in cash and thereafter,
open an account in Amsterdam lodge the funds in and
subsequently transfer in bits to your valid account in
your country of abode.

How do we plan to achieve this?
My perfect modalities to ensure a risk and hitch free
duration of this deal are as follows.

1. You will have to send me a handwritten letter of
guarantee, scan and send via email, issue in my
mother's name Mrs. Mariam Sese-seko, guaranteeing that
after you have secure the funds in Amsterdam, they will
be safe in your possession and be used for further for
investment, which report will be send to her a monthly
bases.

2. After I receive the letter of guarantee from you, I
will instruct my mother's Lawyer to draft a Power of
Attorney, changing the beneficiary name to your name.
And I will send you a copy which you will sign and
send back to me. I will turn send it to the Security
Company in Amsterdam, notifying them in the changes of
beneficiary from mother's to yours.

3. The security company in Amsterdam will now take care
of all the paper work down there and in due course I
will furnish you with their contact number. So that you
can book an appointment with the Security Company on
when you are to arrive Amsterdam.

4. We have agreed to give you 20% of the total money as
your commission for your assistance and cooperation.

I await your prompt response to my mail, as we have to
commence immediately, as you are aware time is of equal
importance as confidentiality in this transaction. Also
feel very free to call me on my confidential numbers
+873762921793 and fax number:+871762921791, so that we
can discuss in details.

Subject: kose (Problem)

Dear Louise,

Am with receipt of your mail, which includes the signed copy of the
contract agreement.

Sequle to my last mail, be informed that I called Amsterdam (Eurolite
services Bv) to enquire to
enquire if our deposit certificate is ready and I was told that it will
be ready by Today.
I was futher informed that when you are travelling to Amsterdam you are
to bring the following
with you;

1. A copy of the power of Attorney.
2. A copy of the Deposit Certificate.
3. A copy of your international Passport identity (To identify that
you)
4. $16,300 (Sixteen thousand Three hundred USD) to cover the
demurrage, which has
accrude over a period of I year and more.

The problem now is how to come up with the $16,300 as you are aware my
family is financially
handicap and I have spent through my nose to get to this stage. I went
an extral mile to even
nogotiate with them if they can allow you to secure the consignment
before payment of
the $16,300 , but I was categorically told that it is not possible, due
to the fact that the
consignment is bond by one invoice, therefore, cannot broken
domicile, also that the
Consignment is covered by an insurance policy (international guarantee
bond), suffix to say that
it is only you the beneficiary that can tamper with the consignment or
rather terminate the
insurance policy, after you have signed for collection.

My dear friend, this a problem which I need your urgent assistance on
and if I must say here, it was never our intension to ask you for any
financial assistance. But as it is now, you are the only person that we
can trust and have faith in, so I plead with you to take it upon
yourself and do everything within your power so that we get this deal over
with. As am here presently as a refugee, I earns $150 for his weekly
allowance, which do is not even enough to feed his family.

I will keep you posted immediately I receive the deposit certificate
from the Security Company.

Dear Kevin,

This is a rather unexpected turn. I doubt that we will be unable to come up with the entire $16,300
since we are not that big an organization. It may be possible that we can come up with $7000 or so
(funds that we had set aside for a future project) towards securing the release of the consignment.
In any event I would prefer that you pay the demurrage before I travel to Amsterdam.
If need be we can send our contribution directly to you or place it in an account to which you would have access.
I have postponed my flight reservation to Amsterdam until next Wednesday until we can sort this out.

Please advise.

I still have a reservation to travel to Amsterdam on Wednesday.
But despite my best efforts we are still only able to raise about $7500

to raise the balance and whether I should still plan on travelling to Amsterdam next Wednesday.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Dear Kevin,

I am a little worried that I haven't yet heard from you regarding my last email.
I have postponed my flight to Amsterdam that was supposed to happen tomorrow until we can work out this minor hitch.
It might take me a while but I think I may be able to raise the entire demurrage amount if you are unable to do anything else.

Please let me know as soon as possible as to the next steps.
If I raise the money should I simply arrive at the Eurolite offices without an appointment and
present my papers in order to clear the consignment?
Or do I need to call them ahead of time and make an appointment?
Also, do they accept cash or checks?
And lastly, in what form is the consignment released?
Is it cash, bonds, or checks?

I hope all is well with you and your family.

Sincerely,

want to send you an email without a positive response regarding raising
the funds. Though we have not been able to come up with anything yet,
am very sorry for this.

Sequel to your questions in your email, see answers below;

1. Once you are able to raise the funds, you are to contact Eurolite
schedule an appointment with them, and they will pick you from the
airport, by their customer relation officer, who will drive to their office
complex, so it is important that you call them.

2 do they accept cash or checks?
You will have to call them up and request for the mode of payment or
rather may you can browse through their website, for this information.

3.in what form is the consignment released? Is
it cash, bonds, or checks?

Be informed that the funds was packaged in two trunks boxes by mother
and shipped to Amsterdam as diplomatic package and the content decleared
as family treausre. Suffix to say that Eurolite services is not aware
of the content of the consignment. Also be informed that Eurolite

Dear Mr. Baker,

I apologize for not getting back to you immediately.
I was not immediately aware of the amount needed to clear the consignment
and hence I was not ready to travel when I received your notification.
I hope to be ready within the next week.

I have some questions regarding delivery of the consigment:

1. When arriving in Amsterdam should I proceed directly to your office or do I need an appointment ahead of time?
If I do not need an appointment what are your normal business hours?
2. Can you please give me directions to your office from the airport?
3. What forms of payment do you accept in order to clear the consignment?

Dear Louise,

Greetings in the name of Our Lord.

Am with receipt of your mail and I should have responded to it, before
now, but I was not feeling ok.

We quite appreciate the way and manner you are handling this business
on our behalf, we are indeed very greatfull.

Also thank you for you picture as it is a good gesture to prove our
relationship would last for a longtime to come, even our grand children
will benefit from it. Find attached scan picture of the consignment.

Please, do endeavour to give me a call, remain bless.

From Louise Rockford

Dear Kevin,

Thank you very much for your email and for the scanned picture of the consignment.
With the goodwill of some of our members I was finally able to raise the entire $16,300
needed to clear the consignment and I have purchased a ticket to travel to Amsterdam
to arrive there on Sunday, August 25th.

I have been in contact with Eurolite (I copied you on my last email to them)
and will hopefully have the consignment cleared soon after I arrive there.
Please let me know what your plans are for arriving in Amsterdam since
I have currently only planned on staying there for a week.

I tried calling you twice on your phone number but it seemed
unable to go through and I kept receiving a busy signal. I will try again later today.
In any event I look forward to meeting you in Amsterdam.

Sincerely,
Louise

Dear Louis,

Thank you for your mail dated 20th of August 2002.

You are required to book your hotel reservation and
call our office from your hotel room, enclose is the
name and telephone number of the hotel.

Name: Hotel Ibis Amsterdam centre,

Our protocol officer will meet with you at the Hotel
and bring you to our office. We do hope to meet with
you soon.

From Louise Rockford

Dear Mr. Baker,

Will your protocol officer still be meeting me at the airport or not?
It would be really helpful if he did and that way I can conclude the business as soon as possible.

Also, I'm not sure if I will be staying at your recommended hotel (Ibis) -
I have the possibility of staying with a friend of a friend and she might be more helpful
in directing me to get around Amsterdam - but we can arrange to meet at your offices or at this friend's home if you like.

Dear Louise Rockford,

Top top of the day to you.

Thank you for your update.

My mother is making a perfect arrangment and she have asked me to seek
your consent. She has negotiated with a gentle man by name Mr. Raymond
Kennedy, who is from Liberia and a diplomat, who helped my mother to
shipped the funds to Amsterdam with his connection as a diplomat and he
his conversant with The Netherlands financial laws. He is to meet with
you in Amsterdam, for the below reasons;

1. To handover the keys of the consignment to you, which is presently
with my mother.

2. To assist you through the whole process of securing the consignment
from Eurolite.

3. To assist you in opening an account with HSBC Bank or ABN Ambro Bank
both of Amsterdam, where you can lodge in the funds, before transfering
in bits to your account.

Also he is making travelling arrangments for Saturday, so that he will
be able to meet you at the airport. So what do you think or what is
your opinion.

I await your urgent response.

Remain bless,
Kevin
NB: please furnish me with your confidential telephone number so that I
can give you a call.

From Louise Rockford

Dear Kevin,

Thank you for your quick response. Yes, your arrangement sounds very good.
Since I have never been to the Netherlands before
it will certainly be helpful to have someone assist me while I'm there.
However, please note that I only arrive in Amsterdam on the morning of Sunday the 25th of August - not Saturday.
I look forward to meeting Mr. Kennedy and hopefully we can clear the consignment by Monday.

I have been in touch with Eurolite and they said that they would have someone meet me at a hotel
but I think I might be able to stay with a friend's friend and perhaps they can
meet me at the friend's house.

I am currently on the road, travelling in Iowa to complete some
fundraising efforts for our organization before I leave on Saturday for Amsterdam.
Unfortunately I do not have a mobile phone and so there is no
good number for you to be able to reach me.
I will try to give you a call again tonight when I check into a motel and
hopefully we speak in person then.

Thank you again for everything,
Louise

From Louise Rockford

Dear Kevin,

Since my departure on Saturday is imminent I just
wished to hear back from you if I should expect to
meet Mr. Kennedy at the airport or not. If I do not
meet him at the airport will he still have the keys
and can I obtain the keys from him by appointment?

Please do let me know at your earliest convenience. I
hope you are feeling better and that all is well with
you and your family. I am still on the road traveling
until Saturday. I was unable to reach you again last
night by phone but I think it was because my calling
card did not have enough time on it to call your
number (it said something like $12 per minute).

[ Louise Note: Didn't try calling of course, just made it up ]

Sincerely,
Louise

whether it was confirmed that someone would be meeting
me at the airport. Here are the details of my flight:

know what you will be wearing and what you look like
so that I can identify you. I will be wearing a
checked bright pink dress with a matching hat. In any
case I am attaching my picture so that you can
identify me easily.

Please don't fail to meet me because I feel
uncomfortable carrying $16,300 in cash and I would
like to conclude the transaction as soon as possible
rather than delaying it. Also, I haven't been to
Europe before and so I would truly appreciate the help
in getting around.

Thank you once again.

Dear Madam,

it was late before i saw your mail and i can't reply because i know that you are already on

Anyway i have gone back with one of my old friend in De hang about one hour drive from
Amsterdam, so you can call me on his wife phone number, the number is 0031-612-722-389.
Please if you call tell her you want to speak with Raymond Kennedy became she and her husband
my friend didn't know my purpose in Holland.

Thanks,

R.Kennedy.

From Louise Rockford

Dear Raymond and Kevin,

Yesterday I had the worst day of my life and finally,
with the help of several Bloody Marys and help from my
friend, I've calmed down enough to be able to get back
in touch with you.

At the Minneapolis airport I was selected for a random
check by airport security at the boarding gate. I
don't know why but it might be because I was wearing a
bright pink dress which I wore only so that it would
be easier for Raymond to identify me when I got to
Amsterdam. During the security search they found my
$17,000 in cash and immediately took me away for
detailed interrogation. I was strip-searched and then
questioned for three hours about my life, work, and
why I was travelling with that much money. It was so
humiliating and embarassing. During this whole time I
was able to answer most of their questions without
revealing either of your names or the fact that I was
going to retrieve a consignment from Eurolite. If you
have ever been strip-searched and interrogated for
several hours you will know how nasty and unpleasant
it is.

[ Louise Note: Louise, of course, did not go to any airport ]

From the airport I called my friend and with her help
the security personnel finally released me with the
money intact. I told them that I carried that much
money because I was going to Amsterdam to put a
down-payment on a new apartment to share with my new
Dutch boyfriend.

Needless to say, I did not get on the flight to
Amsterdam and I am so jittery and shaken up that I'm
not sure I will be able to go to the airport in the
near future. However I would still really like to
pursue this opportunity since the money will mean so,
so much to Conservation Corps and we can save so many
endangered Striped Lutefisk with our share of the
proceeds. I will contact Eurolite and see what
alternative arrangements can be made. I will let you
know when I hear from them. In the meantime I
apologize for how things turned out and I hope it
wasn't a big inconvenience to Raymond to have to be at
the airport on Sunday morning.

[ Louise Note: Lutefisk indeed! ]

Please let me know that everything is okay and if
possible please say a prayer for my peace of mind.

Yours,
Louise

From Louise Rockford

Dear Mr. Baker,

I had a very unpleasant experience at Minneapolis
airport and as a result I did not travel to Amsterdam.
I apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause
relating to the clearing of my consignment.

In an earlier email you mentioned that you can ship
the consignment to any location. If that is still an
option I would like to transfer the clearance fees to
you electronically and then you can ship the
consignment to my address. I think this would be the
best situation. My shipping address is:

Louise Rockford
XXXX

[ Louise Note: The address is of a real funeral home in St. Cloud, MN ]

Dear Kevin and Raymond,

to clear the consignment but I still need to hear from
you about where and when we will meet up. Perhaps we
can meet here in the U.S.A.? Please acknowledge
receipt of this email.

From Louise Rockford

Dear Mr. Baker,

Thank you for your prompt response. Please note that
it will take me a few days to raise the additional
$1,950 and then I will be in a position to transmit
the clearance fees to you.

As regards the modality of payment I feel hesitant
about using a bank transfer since my bad experience at
the airport and in fact I have a feeling that my bank
accounts may be monitored. Hence I would prefer to
transfer the money using a commercial money transfer
agency like Western Union. I would feel that it is
safer this way and I think there should be no problem
at your end. To that effect please give me the name of
a person from your company who will be receiving the
money in Amsterdam and I can make arrangements to wire
the total amount to that person's name to a Western
Union office in Amsterdam. If you prefer I can wire
the money to my business partner (Mr. Kennedy) and he
will be able to bring the clearance fees to your
office.

Again, please advise me on the name of the person who
will be collecting the transfer from the Western Union
office.

Thanks for your mail, and it's content were quite
understood.
The basic reason why we advised the transfer to be
done twice in different names is because western union
money transfer does not allow transfer above
US$10,000.00 at a time.
We advise the total sum be shared between both
account officers names.

Mr Ivan Lowell Green - $9,125.00
Mr Samuel Swain Heywood - $9,125.00

You are advise to follow the guidelines stated to
enable us facilitate your transaction.

Dear Raymond,

I am really concerned that I haven't heard from either
you or Kevin. In fact my last email to Kevin was
returned due to a delivery failure. Is everything
still okay? Should I still proceed with the
transaction with the consignment company? I have to
raise $2000 more but when I do I will have enough to
send the clearance fees directly to the consignment
company and they will be able to ship the consignment
directly to me. But I still need to make arrangements
with Kevin in order to meet with him and arrange for
his investments.

I will hold off on concluding the transaction until
either you or Kevin gives me the go-ahead.

I have been very nervous since my unpleasant
experience at the Minneapolis airport and I would like
to take all precautions to avoid further unpleasant
experiences and to get the clearance fees to you
safely and quickly. As such with the help of my
helpful young nephew I am attaching a self-decrypting
encrypted data text file which contains three pieces
of information:

- a Money Transfer Control Number for Mr. Green
- a Money Transfer Control Number for Mr. Heywood, and
- the answer to a Secret Test Question (instituted by Western Union).

The test question and answers are the same for both
transfers.

Here are the instructions to decrypt the attached text
file:
- please save the file to your harddrive
- rename the file to seko.exe
- double-click on the file to be prompted for the password for decryption
- enter the password and the file will be decrypted

Please note that the data has been encrypted using a
freely available program called [name of a free software tool]
(location of the genuine tool on the net) and it will be
impossible for anyone who intercepts it to decode it
without the correct password. I will be sending the
password in a separate email from a separate email

intercepted is very unlikely. I hope you understand my
precautions in this matter.

Please look to receive my next email (from another

Dear Mr. Baker/Smith,

As discussed before in my email with the data file
here is the password for decrypting the encrypted data file:

sekirtsksifetull

Please note that the password entry is case-sensitive
and will not work if you enter any upper-case letters.
Please advise me as soon as you have received the money from Western Union
and as soon as you have shipped the consignment (if you have a tracking number that would be the best).
Once again my shipping address is:

XXXX

Please do not hesitate to contact me at any time.

Yours Sincerely,
Louise Rockford

From Louise Rockford

Dear Kevin,

I am so glad to hear from you. I was really worried
and wondering what had happened. I tried calling you
again but your number is impossible to connect - I
keep getting a "all circuits busy try again" message.
Anyway, I have sent the money via Western Union to
Eurolite. They should have received it by now and
should be shipping the consignment to me. I am glad
that everything is finally proceeding smoothly.

During the day I work for a travel connection agency
please call me toll free at 1-900-267-8888 Ext. 4744
from 9:00a.m. to 5:00 p.m. CST as soon as possible.

[Louise Note: The number is for a real Psychic line at $3.99 per minute ]

During all this time I forgot to ask you where you
currently reside? Are you in Zaire or are you in
Mauritius? I have always wanted to go to Mauritius and
after we get our $3.2million I'm sure I'll be able to
afford it. So, we need to make plans about how we'll
meet and where we'll meet and how I should proceed
with investing your portion of the money.

Please reply as soon as possible. And thank you for
all your prayers!

Your Friend,
Louise

[ Louise Note: The following five emails from the Lad all arrived on the 29th.
I suspect that what really happened is that the Lad was
changing the clock on his computer and
then sequentially sent these out to try and "respond"
to some of Louise's earlier queries and emails

Dear Louise,

Be adviced that downloading the attachment is a problem, so I will
advice that you send the text question, answer and the control number via
email not attachment to Eurolite so that they can retrive the funds from
the western union office as you have instructed.

Dear Mr. Baker,

I am currently at work and do not have access to a fax machine
and cannot even call you because I am restricted from using the company phone lines
for long distance.
And to be honest I am really worried about someone intercepting data
if I send it in plain text and I simply cannot afford to lose this money
because I know I cannot raise this money again if it is lost.

I have the beginnings of a simple webpage at:
http://www.geocities.com/retribin/index.html
Please visit this page using your browser.
At the bottom of the page you will see a small link titled "Data File Here"
Please click on the link and save the "seko.zip" file to your harddrive.
Then unzip the file and extract the "seko.exe" file.
However, you will still need the password I sent you
from my other email account in order to decrypt this file.

[Note from ScamO: the web site of the Endangered Striped Lutefisk is worth a visit in its own right!]

Please let me know as soon as you have received the
money and as soon as you have shipped the consignment.

Yours Sincerely,
Louise Rockford
Conservation Corps

P.S. I am attaching the zip file to this email as well
in case you are able to receive attachments now.

[Louise attaches a zip file containing the
nasty "encrypted" seko.exe executable

Dear Mr. Baker,

I will be unable to check email again for the
remainder of the work-day because we are going to be
in all-day training sessions today and the first few
days of next week (Monday is a holiday due to Labor
Day).

Please, I do not understand how you are unable to
retrieve the data file. I am simply not going to risk
losing these funds because of poor security
precautions. Please, please understand that I am
actually a very poor person and my organization
(Conservation Corps) is also a very small and poor
organization. We were very hard put to raise this much
money and I doubt that we will be able to do it again.

Here are the instructions again to retrieve the text data file:
1. Using your browser go to the site
http://www.geocities.com/retribin/
2. Scroll down the page and right-click on the small link at the bottom left that says "Data File Here"
3. Save the Link as "seko.zip" to your harddrive
4. Unzip the seko.zip file to extract the "seko.exe" file
5. Double-click on the seko.exe file
6. At the prompt type in the password that was sent to
you from the other email account and the seko.exe file
will be decrypted into a "seko.txt" file which can be
opened using Notepad or Microsoft Word or any other
text editor.
7. Please look at [help forum for the real software encryption tool]
for decryption related help.
I will try to check email again from the library this
evening. Please let me know when you have cleared the
monies from Western Union. I have not been able to
afford a phone line at home but I will endeavour to
have one put in by next week so that you can reach me
at any time.

Yours Sincerely,
Louise Rockford
Conservation Corps

[ Louise Note: As of Aug 30th 4:00p.m. PDT the

all the other hits were those by Louise who uses a Linux machine
(the nasty file works only on Windows machines

From Louise Rockford

Dear Brother Kevin,

I hope all is well with you. I am glad that everything
is going smoothly. It looks like the consignment
company had some problems receiving my attachment but
I'm hopeful that they have resolved it all by now. I
have been through so much trouble to get all the money
together - especially since the airlines have not yet
refunded me the $2000 cost of the flight to Amsterdam
and it also cost me $850 to send the money by Western
Union. I am now heavily in debt until the consignment
arrives.

Yes, I look forward to meeting you and Mauritius
sounds like a great idea. Have you ever been to the
Seychelles? I hear that those are very nice islands
too.

As soon as I receive the consignment I will immediately send you $3000.
Please give me the address to which I should send the money.

My greetings and well-wishes to your beautiful family
and your mother Mrs. Sese-Seko.

Your Sister,
Louise

From Louise Rockford

Mr Baker,

Were you able to collect the money from Western Union?
When are you shipping the consignment? My phone number
at work is 1-900-267-8888 Ext. 4744 please call me
immediately with an update on the status of the
consignment.

Yours Sincerely,
