The basic scam is "I need a {hotel reservation : product X : violin lessons} here is my (fake) payment -- oops, I have to cancel {or whatever} because { my dog died : I need an operation : whatever }, please send me a refund -- or oops, I overpaid, please refund the difference."
Items will be added moving upwards (reverse chronological order).
Most of these were sent to people at random, not hotels.

Whilst we are not qualfied to give legal or financial advice, especially given that you are in another country, I would make the following suggestions. This definetely looks highly suspicious; asking you to deduct money from a cheque for an amount that is higher than the price of your rooms and asking you to send the balance by Western Union is a classic example of advance fee fraud, or 419 fraud. That your hotel is being targeted is rare - it is the first example we have come across. The cheque from Mr Edward's "organization" may look like it has cleared but it is highly likely it is a fake and you will be liable for any money that you send to this gentleman. The credit card is likely to have been stolen, or the card stolen and the details put onto a blank card with the original being destroyed. Have you sent any money? If so, stop the payment *immediately*. Do not, under any circumstances whatsoever, give this man any money. Another suggestion would be to tell him that you accept cash on check-in (or check-out) only. His reaction will tell you what you need to know.
