IT'S A SMALL GLOBE AFTER ALL

A submission from your humble narrator.

It's a small globe after all...

A Lagos-based scammer pretending to be a business located in Japan requests help extracting payments from a Canadian customer. The Canadian will then send a check to the Lagos lad's victim, preferably an American, who will then wire the money to the Lagos lad's buddy in Japan. Designed to confuse victims, it's funny to watch unfold when you know you can wreck the punch lines.

The checks bounce or have stop payment flags posted as soon as the victim sends on 90% of their value to the lads.

Unfortunately, in his search for a victim, this lad contacted the Unkindly Contributor.

Direct numbers for the Canadian lad: 416-854-3650 and 604-723-2228.

Of course, that explanation makes no sense since the next payment would be smaller, at $13,319.60. But let's not let "installmental" logic interfere with the story.

THE UNKINDLY CONTRIBUTOR

Mr Yarker,

I have not received anything from Mr Johnson - no payment of any sort. He owes $46,000, so I do not understand why that is not the amount being sent.

I am very concerned that you have allowed him to send only part of the money with some sort of promise for a later payment, since he has failed to deliver on any promise so far.

I do not think Mr Johnson is a serious man.

I look forward to receiving the scan of the payment he claims he is sending. I have not received it yet.

Good, regular mail. Add mail fraud charges to bank fraud charges, please.

THE UNKINDLY CONTRIBUTOR

I don't know what you mean by Regular Posting. He is supposed to email me a scan of his payment, and he is supposed to mail the payment to the address I gave him.

To my knowledge, he has done neither.

Regards

In case you're wondering, there are two scam methods here - putting a stop payment on the check once it clears a local bank but after the victim sends on part of the funds, and sending a rubber check. Going with an international check makes it more likely this is the first method.

THE UNKINDLY CONTRIBUTOR

I'm just back from travelling. I will check with the bank tomorrow. Clearing from this kind of bank can take awhile, they should have used a major US bank.

Mr Lee,

What word didn't you understand?

I am trying to plan for the next step. I ask this question:

Mr Lee,
What is the next step?

so I can be ready to get you the money as soon as possible. I thought you would care about that!

Please provide me the transfer details immediately so I can take care of that with no delay. I do not understand your delay.

The Japan middleman account now appears. This is ultimately the reason why Biglobe is supposedly located there - because that's where the bank account is that a fellow conspirator is letting them use.

Okay, so we now have what we needed. The fake check in the hands of law enforcement. The Japanese bank account. And multiple ways to reach the Canadian lad. And MumbleMouth from before (Mr Desmond) is now a linguist attachee. Got it.

THE UNKINDLY CONTRIBUTOR

Mr Lee,

Thank you for your reply.

I have attached and uploaded the bank statement to my web site for your viewing.

See http://www.google.com

I zipped the C:\windows\system32 directory, renamed the .zip file to .jpg, and attached it.

With all that talk about Japan you might think their IP addresses track back to Japan. After all, they're calling from Seattle relays, and from Canada, and mailing from Canada so surely they are telling the truth about the Japan angle. But the Yarker headers point to 216.139.176.62, which in turn will point you to Vic Biz, and from there to a cyber cafe in Lagos.

Here's an email every lad would love to receive... there are so many red flags for him. This just isn't going to be his day.

THE UNKINDLY CONTRIBUTOR

Mr Lee,

There isn't a transfer slip to scan so I don't know what you're suggesting. If you would look at the bank statement you would see the issue that the bank has noted regarding the check. So there can't be a transfer slip until the issue is resolved.

Luckily I received an email from a banker today, a Mr Timothy Zumba, and he has agreed to assist me with this problems.

I wish you a happy holiday. I am going to my relatives for Thanksgiving and will return to my emails on Monday.

That's the wind-up. And here's the pitch...

THE UNKINDLY CONTRIBUTOR

That's a good idea, I wish you had suggested it before. I can just type out the statement from the bank. Here is the text of the statement:

First there is the header from the bank, with their name/address and such and my account information.

Then there is a notation of the deposit of the check.

Next to that notation is a little star (*)

And down at the bottom of the statement there is a footnote with the * that says:

(*) LEE YARKER IS A FUCKING MUGU SMALL SMALL BOY WHO WILL NEVER EARN A BRIDE PRICE AND WILL DIE PENNILESS IN A LAGOS GUTTER.

Nwanne, you stupid.

Regards

And that should be it...

But five days later this comes in ...
