THE OGONI AND THE ECSTASY, or, THE OGONI EMBARGO

CAMMY WHITE last appeared in AM SICK AND TIRED OF THIS WHOLE LONG STORY. She is a mate of ELIZA DANE (goth chick extraordinaire) and MAL REYNOLDS (renegade pilot) (see I AM NOT HEAR FOR A JOKE OK and GOOD GRIEF! and other masterpieces).

Cammy receives a demand from Nigeria for party supplies... and she had a good time not coming up with the goods.

The Scammers

The Baiter

And here's the opening salvo, with the usual Lad disregard for spelling...

Dr. Regent Kabb (or Kabba)

To...Camille White.
Dear Frind,
It will please you to know that i recently discovered the reason for the delay in payment of your contract amount of us$17,5million a thorough investigation recealed that the Ogoni community where your contract was executed wrote a petition to the federal government stopping payment of the contract amount due to you.
The community is claiming that no compensation has been paid to them as a resuly of forceful acquisition of their land and damages done to their economic crops. They got information that your payment was due so they sent in a petition stopping it until the compenastion is paid.
In view of this development, It is decided that you must come down to nigeria to meet with the community leaderes and reach a meaningfuc agreement that will lead to the release of your money.
Kndly let me know when you will come down to nigeria not later that 7/2/2011 to sign agreement with the community.
I have met with the leaders and told them that you will unfailingly arrive nigeria on that 7/2/2011 to conclude the agreement with them and they will in turn write a letter to the fed govt. To lift the embargo placed on the payment of your money. Please treat this matter with the urgency it deserves.
Awaiting your response.
Regards.
Dr. Regent Kabb

The Ogoni are a community in Nigeria's oil-rich delta. Their struggles can be learned about on the interwebs. BTW if you hear from someone claiming to be Ken Saro Wiwa's son, and asking for help to claim his inheritance, he's lying. But you knew that.

So, the way this kind of thing works is that you need to go to Nigeria (or wherever) to do the legal paperwork. But you can't go, of course, so the kindly scammer offers to find a lawyer to represent you. For a fee.
In this case, there's a wrinkle - read on!

Camille (Cammy) White

Well, it's a new script, I'll give him that!
I decided to throw in an early monkey wrench with the reference to a pre-existing contract, and see what the Lad would do with it.

Dr Kabb,
I'm confused.
The only contract I had involving Nigeria was worth $1 million and I don't see how it could have involved forceful acquisition of land and damage to crops.
Please explain further.
Camille White

Dr. Regent Kabb (or Kabba)

As it happened, the Lad decided to do nothing with it.
The list of supplies for the agreement ceremony is, again, at least showing some inventiveness. The mistake about Cammy's gender, though, is nothing new.

Scam-o-indicators highlighted for those who need highlighting.

Dear Camille White ,
Sir,
Thanks so much for your early response. There is an issue to take care of before payment of your money takes effect. Here we go... Firstly,an agereement has to be drawn up between you and the Ogoni community that owns the land where your contract was executed so that the embargo on your payment will be lifted. You are supposed to be present in the signing ceremony of the agreement as demanded by the community. But if you cannot come, A lawyer and i will represent you provided we fulfill all the conditions of the agreement.
The conditions of the agreement are as follow; The community demanded the following items in line with the existing african tradition;
(a) Dne cow
(b) Two cartons of tobacco leaves
(c) Two cartons of hot drinks
(d) One basket of kola nuts
(e) One basket of bitter kola
(f) 20, tubers of yam
The items above will cost about $1,850 including transportation to Ogoni community. The community is not demanding any money but as soon as they receive there items, They will sign the agreement and in turn send a letter to the govt. Revoking the order stopping payment of your money. Please kindly send $1, 850 to facilitate the conclusion of the agreement in order for your money to be released.
Send the $1,850 to the following names;...................

Dr Kabba,
First off - don't call me sir; I'm a woman. Not even my father would have been so cruel he'd call a boy Camille!
Secondly - where are these people that I'm supposed to have put to such inconvenience?
Camille White

Dr. Regent Kabb (or Kabba)

He seems not to have noticed the reference to $1 million as against $17.5 million, and stays on script.

Dr. Regent Kabba.

Just before this bait, a team of 419Eater members had run a bait as a modelling agency, and I (as Cammy) had extracted a slew of photos on the pretext of a publicity campaign for the introduction of Australian Rules football into Africa.
For the record, the photographs were a total failure.

Camille (Cammy) White
Dr Kabba,
As I told you - the contract was worth $1 million, and the Collingwood football club paid up without any problems, so I'm not sure what's going on.
Also, the photoshoot was at a sports stadium, and no-one was playing at the time, so we didn't disturb anyone.
I don't know what these landowners might have showed you, or said to you, but something is definitely wrong here.

So it's time to lay out some facts that he can't dodge, and see how he copes.

Dr Kabba,
Let's look at this one thing at a time.
[1] Don't call me Sir again. I'm a woman.
[2] The contract was worth $1 million, not $17.5 million.
[3] The photoshoot took place within a sports stadium. No-one was upset in any way.
[4] The contract was paid out in full by the AFL. The Ogoni, whoever they are, haven't prevented that and they couldn't have prevented that.
Please tell the Ogoni that they have no case.
Camille White
Dr. Regent Kabb (or Kabba)

Dr Kabba,
The contract was paid by the AFL upon delivery of the photographs. There is no way that the Ogoni could have stopped that, and they didn't. Just tell them to get their own party stuff.
Camille White

I didn't hear from him again.
